The machine is provided with a preliminary drum-like sieve which has a smaller dia and shorter length than the main sieve drum and is designed to project at the inlet end into the sieve drum. The inner end of the preliminary sieve is closed so that the unpulverised articles kept back by the preliminary sieve are sepd. from the remaining residue and can be removed from time to time. Since the sole purpose of the preliminary sieve is to retain the non-pulverisable materials it can be made of comparatively thick material with a wide mesh width which withstands the stress placed on it by the retained material.
