ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREDisclosed is an article of manufacture, comprisinga hollow rod comprised of a longitudinally gathered tubeof cellulose hydrate-based material, the hollow rodhaving a latent water content of between about 25% and100% by weight based upon the total weight of the hollowrod and being free of chemical anti-bacteriocidal agent;a closed, substantially gas impermeable packaging sheath-having a hollow interior chamber therein, with the hollowrod being positioned in the hollow interior chamber,whereby the hollow rod is completely enveloped by thepackaging sheath, wherein the packaging sheath is com-prised of a flexible film of material which is sub-stantially impermeable to gases; and a protective gasessentially filling the remaining portion of the hollowinterior chamber, with the gas protecting the hollowrod against the formation of aerobic microorganisms onthe water-containing cellulose hydrate-based material.
