High density iron-base material prodn. by liq. phase sintering - by enlarging liquidus-solidus temp. range by adding carbon to the alloy powder before compaction
A high carbon, heat and abrasion resistant, iron-base alloy having a final compsn. which includes at least 1% of one of Cr, V, Mo, W is produced by (a) atomizing a melt having an initial C content of 0.2%, (b) blending the powder from (a) with enough C particles to give a blend having a C content greater than the C content found at the iron-base alloy's eutectic point, thereby creating greater difference between the liquidus and solidus temps., (c) compressing the blend in a die at 2800 kg/cm2 and (d) sintering at a temp. between the liquidus and solidus temps. to produce a high density material. Prodn. of small size wear resistant articles from alloys which are almost eutectic. The C addn. enables liquid phase sintering to be carried out, by creating a wider top range between liquidus and solidus, thus the high density articles can be made economically by powder metallurgy. The addn. of 1-2 wt.% C has little effect on the properties of the resulting alloy.
