The rotary (4) label applicator cylinder (1) is intended for a bottle labelling machine. It comprises at least one outwardly pivotable gripper (11) which together with a retainer (9), holds a label, and a pressure pad (15) which is movable radially outwardly and pivotable (7) about an axis at right angles to the cylinder axis (4). Gripper swivel and radial pad movement are controlled by cam faces. The gripper is pivotable in a carrier (8) which also holds the retainer (9). The pressure pad (15) is radially movable in that carrier which is itself pivotable (77) relative to the cylinder under control of a separate cam track below (27).
