The procedure for decontaminating Diesel engine exhaust gases is based on the principle that the gases are cooled substantially to precipitate the condensab le portion, and the noxious contaminants dissolved in the condensats. Th cooled gases are passed through several, also cooled, sealed vessels (1, 2, 3) holding condensate in series. Into the last one (3) they are introduced (19) above the condensate surface; into the others below. All gas outlets (13, 17, 22) are above the liq. level. Below it are overflow pipes (4, 5) connecting the vessels; discharge from the last one is via a pipe (6) with its inlet low down but with a high point (6') above overflow-pipe level.
