The control circuit (6) for the chopper receives signals from the generator terminals and also from a transducer (51) in the field circuit. The voltage signal is compared (61) with a set reference (23), and the resulting error fed to a comparator (65) whose other input is a field current dependent signal from the transducer. The comparator output controls the chopper timing.
