The lathe has a differential drive unit for mfg. milling cutters with helical chip grooves. A conventional numerical control unit is employed to drive two slides independently. Any desired contour can be achieved on the milling cutters. On machine bed (1) is a headstock (2) with driving motor (3) for spindle (4) rotating a holder (7) mounted on tailstock (5) and carrying workpiece (6). Motor (16) and spindle (15) are used to drive bed slide (8) along guides. The slide (8) is fitted with a relief turning slide (9), on which is a slide (10) moved radially w.r.t. piece (6) via a motor (12) and gearbox (11). Slide (10) carries another slide (13) driven by a handwheel and carrying the cutting tool (14). The position of spindle (4) is measured by a rotor (18) feeding signals to a numerical control unit (17) which drives motors (12, 16). Motor (3) is connected to a shaft in headstock (2); and the shaft is connected by a differential to slide (9).
