The cartridge scatters electromagnetic target material, particularly from an aircraft. It contains at least two charges of this material, each with its separate charge of pyrotechnic material. The charges are ignited one after the other, so that the batches of target material are scattered in successive groups. The charge nearest to the cartridge outlet can be fired first and there can be pyrotechnic time delays between the charges, so that they are fired at set time intervals.
