The arrangement is intended for approaching the efficiency of isothermic compression of gas in a displacement compressor (3). This is achieved by cooling (1, 2) the gas before it enters the compressor inlet so that it enters at a reduced volume (V'). To maximise the benefit of precooling, the flow resistance in the cooler should be as low as possible so that the compressor inlet pressure (p') is as near as possible to the cooler inlet pressure (p). If the gas is cooled below 0 deg. C, cooling is pref in two stages and the frozen condensate is removed between these stages. After-cooling may be omitted and the compressed gas may be carried in thermally insulated lines.
