Control pulses in a main sequence are produced initially and are passed to the thyristor converter, whose parameters are intended to correspond with defined values. The parameters are monitored via all the control channels (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). If the parameters of the control pulses in the main sequence deviate from the preset values, control pulses from a spare sequence, having parameters which are identical to the preset parameters of the control pulses in the main sequence, are produced and are passed via the same control channels (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). The parameters of the control pulses in the reserve sequence are monitored and the production of the control pulses in the main sequence is automatically set when the parameters of the control pulses in the reserve sequence correspond with the said preset values. The device has a main unit (8), a reserve unit (9) for producing the control pulses, and a main unit (13) and a reserve unit (12) for monitoring the parameters of control pulses, which are connected in series and to a thyristor converter (1). The method and the device can be used in exciter systems for synchronous machines and in DC electrical drives. IMAGE
