Gastrointestinal tract treatment - by ferromagnetic tampon applied by strong magnetic field

Prepn. for local treatment of gastro-intestinal tract, e.g. to staunch bleeding from ulcers, or to treat other infections and injuries, contains ferromagnetic particles which are applied by magnetic attraction. A tampon consiting of finely pulverised ferromagnetic particles, mixed with viscous liq., is introduced and directed under endoscopic inspection to the bleeding part. A strong magnetic field is then applied and the pressure exerted on the wound is usually sufficient to still the bleeding. This is a safer method than cauterising by a laser beam or using a tissue adhesive.
