A yarn construction having two sets of fibres, an inner and an outer, of which at least the outer set comprises staple fibre. A proportion of the outer fibres have leading ends secured under the outermost of the inner set of fibre, and then mutually intersect in both directions, forming an intermediate, interlaced layer; the trailing ends together with the remainder of the outer set of fibres, assume regular, unidirectional helical form on the surface of the yarn. The inner set of fibres may comprise continuous filaments of textured or untextured synthetic material with low, zero or alternating twist. The yarn is torsionless and can be woven and knitted at high speed without snarling problems. It is relatively smooth and hairless, and does not deteriorate in quality or appearance in processing. The strength is higher than opened or traditionally spun yarns, and it has a better cover factor.
