The mask is for adapting the rocket to launching conditions, and consists of a diaphragm for fitting to the nozzle so as to shut if off partially. This has a calibrated opening (5) and disintegrates beyond a predetermined temperature level. The calibration can be adjusted before launching to suit the desired speed and altitude, typically by cutting the diaphragm out to a particular pattern, using a template to cut along one of a series of closed lines (6) marked on the diaphragm. The latter can be formed of a material of predetermined thickness, typically lmm, and dissolving above 200 deg.C.
