The moment when freezing of a part of a live body of particular outline occurs uses two or more electrodes which are implanted in the periphery of the body, these being connected to a measuring unit for the body impedance between them. The variations indicated are a function of the degree of freezing of the body, and when impedance becomes very great this indicates that it is total. The resistance or impedance can be measured by alternating current.
