The tub (10) of a front loading washing machine consists of a sheet steel hoop to which is added a rear panel (15). The hoop is made from a base portion (12) which is larger than the sheet forming the two sides (13) and the top (14). The two lengths of sheet constituting the hoop may be joined by welding. Two welds (16) may be used, each locating somewhat above the base panel (12). The projecting part of the base may be folded up to form a shallow frontal wall (17). Residual sheet at the corners of the front wall may be return folded (18) against the side walls. The side walls may be stiffened by grid-form pressed indentations.
