The hollow shaft (4) rotates in the bearings and is driven from the diesel engine through the gear wheel (5). The drive to the fuel pump shaft is transmitted through the helicoidal splines by the piston (12) which in turn is driven by the parallel splines from the shaft (4). Oil supplied by the engine pump flows into the annulus (17) and out through a radial hole in the inner piston (8). As engine speed increases, governor weights cause the piston (8) to move to the left shutting off the oil outlet so that the oil pressure rises. This causes the piston (12) to move to the right, rotating a shaft and advancing the operation of the fuel injection pump.
