Hg is removed from a gas using impregnated active carbons which can be regenerated. The carbons are impregnated with H2SO4 and I2 or a water soluble iodine. The active carbons are used to purify air from Hg contamination. By impregnating simultaneously with H2SO4 and I2 or an iodine type of catalytic action is obtd. which accelerates Hg removal giving gases with extremely low Hg contents. It is no longer necessary to sublime I2 onto active carbons impregnation with the iodide suffices.
