The boots (1) are for cross country walking and can be changed into ski boots by adding a removable rigid shell (2). The shell covers the supple upper (5) of the boot, at least in the area of the instep and the front of the ankle and is shaped to fit the boot. It is held in place by two straps (10, 11) which are sufficiently long to surround the boot. One extremity of each strap is joined to one edge of the shell and the other extremity (12, 13) has a buckle (14, 15) which can be connected to a locking catch (17, 18) fixed on the shell.
