Bearing combining taper rollers and balls - has different thrust capacities in each direction to suit design load

A double thrust rolling bearing has a common inner race (1) with two tracks (2, 3). The track is for the taper rollers (r) contained in the cage (C1) and in the cage (C2) and surrounded by the outer race (5). With conventional thrust bearings the thrust is taken by two rows of identical rolling members. But since it rarely happens that the thrust loads are the same in both directions, it means that one of the thrust assemblies is too large and therefore unnecessarily expensive. The rolling members are thus chosen to suit the thrust load in each direction, resulting in a less expensive bearing.
