A battery-operated hand lamp incorporates a metallised parabolic reflector (11) protected by a diffuser (5) secured to the head (2) by peripheral projections (12). Location of the bulb carrier (3) effects fixing of a contact plate (6). The head (2) has an enlargement (13) and a cut-out or detent (14) to locate the plate in position. The operating switch (8), of insulating material, moves in a slot of the wall of the head (2). The inner end of the switch is in the form of two parallel side pieces whose remote ends operate directly on the tongue of the contact plate (7).
