An electronic weighing scale is used to determine the price of an article by multiplication of the measured weight by the unit price. The weighing scale has a platen connected by levers, springs and knife-edge pivots to a slotted plate (8). A light bulb and photoelectric cells a*e used to detect motion of the slotted plate. The cells (101 to 104) generate a train of pulses as the slotted plate (8) moves. Electronic modules including a counter are used to provide an indication of the weight of an article and to calculate its price.
