Novel cpds. are of formula (A) (A') and (B): (CH2=C(CH3)-(where R'=alkyl; R" = H or linear alkyl). They have an absorption max. in UV light of 252nm wavelength and a molar extinction coefficient of 3.05.104 mol-1.1cm-1; of formula (A') when n=2 (when n=1, these are known from (where n=1 and R'=H and m and p are whole nos, the sum of n+p=0-10 inclusive; or when n=2 and R'=alkyl, n=p=o). (B) has an absorption max. in UV. light of 335 nm wavelength and a molar extinction coefficient of 2.2.104 mol.-1 when n=1, and when n=2, these values are esp. 340nm and 3.6.104 mol. 1 cm-1. Used for the prodn. of copolymers with triple- or star-sequences of the ABA type when A may be an ethylene or styrene sequence and B is a polydiene. These copolymers are of the thermoplastic elastomeric type, having improved mechanical properties. Also for the prodn. of polymer having a stereo-regular polydiene sequence, the ends thereof carrying reactive functions such as OH, acid, mercapto or peroxide gps. these polymers being telechelic polymers.
