Catalytic hydrodesulphurisation of heavy residual oils - after sepn. into light and heavy fractions

In the hydrogenating conversion of heavy petroleum residues in a 3-phase fluidised bed of liquid charge, catalyst and H2 at elevated temp. and pressure, the charge is first separated into light and heavy fractions, which are treated separately and the catalyst used for the light fraction is used again for treating the heavy fraction. The process is used for prodn. of high quality fuel oils contg. less sulphur. Consumption of catalyst is reduced by 1.5 times from known processes for treating vacuum residues, and yield of liquid prods. is increased by 2.5 times from that of processes involving previous de-asphalting of the residual oil.
