The process consists essentially in bringing a ship 3 close to a column 2 and stabilising it in relation thereto by mooring it thereto, thus causing the column to take up a considerable part of the stresses which are exerted on the ship. Two sliding beams 4 fixed to the framework of the ship are cantilevered out to rest on supports 9 on the column and the load 1 is slid along the beams until it rests on the column.
