The tool comprises a terminally split sleeve (4) which expands radially upon the axial penetration of a cone-nosed (8) shaft (6). The tool moves axially into the pipe to expand against a calibrating ring (150), and may be used in fabricating heat exchangers for nuclear power plants. The tool, with axis horizontal, is incorporated on a machine which is euipped to displace the shaft axially and rotate the sleeve. Mountings position the end of the tube in the trajectory of the tool and provide support for calibrating rings. The rings may be in one piece located on the tool or may comprise two demi-shells mounted on the barrel of the tube.
