A filter for purifying gases comprises an enclosure with an inlet for the gas being purified and a filter element placed in the enclosure. The filter element consists of a hollow filter panel filled with filler material in particles, fixed by one of its sides on a horizontal shaft. The large faces are perforated and one of these faces is doubled externally by a solid plate which forms with it a chamber connected to a duct within the shaft which opens outside the enclosure. Two panels are pref. mounted on a shaft symmetrically in relation to a diametral plane perpendicular to the panels. The shaft can rotate about its axis and a distribution system allows the duct to be put into communication with a pipe for discharging purified gases or with a pipe for blowing air in. For filtration, the filter element is put into communication with the pure gas discharge pipe after having been put into the most favourable position by rotation of the shaft. For cleaning, the filter element is placed horizontally so that the solid wall is on top. The filter can contain a series of filter elements placed in a common enclosure and can be cleaned rapidly and efficiently without it being necessary to use auxiliary agitation mechanisms.
