The centrifugal pump with a vertical drive shaft (3) has a double sided impeller (2), which rotates in the housing (5) with inlet guide vanes (4) at its lower end. The water flows out of the casing between the diffuser vanes (7) to the outlet (6). The diffuser vanes are pear shaped in the tangential plane with a sharp leading edge (B). A transverse hole (9) passes through the vane at its thickest region. This transverse hole forms the inlet duct for the upper side of the impeller. The water (K) flowing into the casing (1) is thus split into two streams which approach the impeller from opposite sides without interfering with the delivery flow (E).
