Acrylic! resin stable in absence of air - obtd. by dissolving methacrylic! polymer in (meth)acrylic monomers, cooling, adding polymerisation inhibitor and adding accelerator
A new, ready-for-use acrylic resin is prepd. by (a) dissolving a methacrylic polymer in a mixt. of acrylic and methacrylic monomers at 25-40 degrees C (pref. 35 degrees C) with slow, regular stirring until the polymer particles are completely dissolved (i.e. after 1-2 h), (b) cooling the soln. to room temp., (c) adding a polymerisation inhibitor, and (d) adding an accelerator. The resin is used in dental treatments where work has to be carried out in a short time in the presence of the patient. The resin has high softening pt. but retains thermoplastic properties to enable it to be shaped as required. The ratio of monomers determines its flexibility; equimolar proportions give a very flexible resin. The resin can be preserved for several months in an air-tight can.
