The grinding head (M) travels along a circular track (12a, 13a) and is mounted on a travelling frame. The frame is displaced along the bore of the pipe to stop at joint positions, comprising a lattice-work drum on which the track is fixed. A self-propelled carriage (11) is used to locate the grinding head, the latter having a motor driven grinder of the band disc, or cylinder type. Carriage propulsion may be effected by a winch and cable system, two counter wound cables (18A, 18B) being anchored to the winding cylinder, and extending in opposite directions on the frame perimeter to attach to opposite ends of the carriage (11).
