Water soluble monoazo dyes of formula (I) are new: (where X is CH3, Y is NH2 or vice-versa; and D is a benzene or naphthalene diazo residue substd. by a water solubilising acid gp.). (I) are yellow to orange dyes for wool and silk, but, esp. for polyamides such as Nylon 6 and Nylon 66. (I) have excellent wet and light fastness. Pref. the water solubilising group in (I) is chosen from sulpho, sulphato, carboxyl and -SO2NHSO2R6 where R6 is an opt. substd. alkyl or aryl group or a dialkylamino. Pref. are 2 sulphonic acid groups. (I) are prepd. e.g. by diazotising a prim. aromatic amine carrying =1 water solubilising group and then coupling with 2,5-dimethyl-7-aminopyrazolo (1,5a) - pyrimidine or 2,7-dimethyl-5-aminopyrazolo (1,5a) pyrimidine.
