The safety device for a gas-fired water heater comprises a sampling tube (9) for the products of combustion, running between the inside of the heater body at the top (2) and a point near the monitoring flame (5) and below the thermocouple (8) of the main valve admitting gas to the burner. This tube partly supplies the monitoring flame with air saturated in carbon dioxide, so that this flame only goes out in the area where the thermocouple is heated. It remains caught in the complementary zone so as to ensure ignition.
