The postage finding data is transferred to a finding computer from the location of the finding meter. The meter has a postage meter program with a routine for processing coded meter data and, dependent on the processing, which allows funding data to be added to at least one funding register. The funding computer is located remotely from the meter and receives variable postage funding data. The computer contains a program for converting the variable data into coded meter data which is transmitted to the meter from the computer.
