Water cooling box for wall of arc melting furnace - contains baffles so water follows labyrinthine path, and is used for partial replacement of refractory furnace lining

The closed box is made of steel plate, and is located in the furnace casing above the level of the molten bath, so the box partly replaces the refractory furnace lining. The box has curved parallel walls matching the curvature of the round furnace; and the front wall is covered by refractory or solidified slag. The box has narrow side walls plus a water inlet and outlet; and it contains seven vertical baffle plates forming a labyrinthine path followed by the water. The baffle plates are welded to the outer wall of the box but are not welded to the inner curved wall, against which they rest via pressure; but the first and last baffle plate may be welded to both inner and outer curved walls. The labyrinth is formed by leaving gaps alternately at the top and bottom ends of the baffle plates. The boxes have a longer working life than the refractory normally used on the upper part of the furnace casing.
