The coffin is made up of a central, rectangular container receiving the body, a pedestal and a lid. The container is built from a material which will decompose easily e.g. from wooden panels which can be made of a series of standard sizes. The base and cover are made of a more resilient material e.g. metal or plastics. The base has a series of hollow sections to reduce its overall weight and has a curved mouldings or beading around the periphery. The hollow lid has similar ornamental beading. The lid and base can be moulded or, if using sheet metals, can be pressed into shape.
