The cutter comprises a long bed made from a rolled steel beam. At one end are two hydraulic cylinders. Both are single acting and fixed to the machine bed. The lower ram has a pusher head and exerts the splitting pressure on the wood. The upper ram returns the lower one. At the other end of the bed is the main splitting wedge (23), its edge (25) being provided with two recesses (26). These provide alternative positions for a separate wedge (27) of narrower width which localises and increases the splitting capacity of the machine.
