Fire-retardant PVC compsn. contains Al(OH)3 and/or Mg(OH)2, the PVC being crosslinked or crosslinkable (by radiation or by addn. of a cross-linking agent and opt. heating). It can also contain Zn(OH)2, Ca(OH)2, Zr(OH)4, Sn(OH)2, Fe(OH)2, Fe(OH)3, Pb(OH)2, Pb2O(OH)2, Pb3O2(OH)2 and/or MoO(OH)3. The fire retardancy is better than that obtd. using Sb2O3, bromide or chloride cpds. and plasticisers contg. P, whilst the physical properties of the polymer are not impaired. The compsn. contains a total of 5-300 (30-100) wt. pts. inorganic hydroxide(s)/100 wt. pts. PVC.
