Removing trash from less dense articles, e.g. soil from vegetables - by liquid separation in horizontal drum with velocity gradient trash discharge

Process comprises feeding articles through a horizontal drum which rests in a trough through which a water stream carries the articles so the separating drum. Helical baffles within the drum move trash to a discriminator mounted at one end of the drum which then discharges trash into a chute. The discriminator includes spiral baffles which acts as conduits to produce currents of water as the drum rotates. These currents discriminate between trash and the articles and deposit the trash on transverse baffles wich discharge into the chute. Even small stones are sepd. from root vegetables and tubers.
