The application is to winding coils for small power transformers with permanently closed magnet circuits. The coil is wound onto a former, arranged over a core limb, which is rotated. The former is driven through pegs (50) attached to a toothed wheel (31) set into motion through a gear train (30). The toothed wheel is supported by back up rollers (35). To install the transformer core and former, a section of the toothed wheel can be withdrawn into a slot in the support structure (26). The slot is marginally wider than the largest core diameter.
