New stabilised suppositories contg. ergot alkaloids and/or their derivs. contain an SO2-releasing substance in fine dispersion in an amt. of 0.2-5 mg. per suppository. Used for treatment of migraine or related headaches. Suppositories are the pref. alternative to oral treatment of migraine (oral medication is often not possible in migraine, and parenteral admin. has to be undertaken by the physician), but ergot alkaloids are generally unstable in suppository formulations. Suppositories contg. SO2-releasing substances, on the other hand, can remain stable for years. In an example, stabilised suppositories consist of 0.325 mg. ergotamine tartrate, 0.500 mg. sodium disulphite, 2.000 mg. butylhydroxyanisole, 5.000 mg. aneurin nitrate, 60.000 mg. caffeine, 100.000 mg. dimethylaminophenyldimethylpyrazolone, and 1190.000 mg. suppository mass.
