Hand-operated pump for deep wells - utilises buoyancy of wooden pump rod to reduce pumping effort

The hand operated pump for pumping water from wells or bore holes has a cylindrical housing above ground level. A boss at the upper end of the housing forms a guide for the upper pump rod. The upper pump rod passes through a sealing bush and is connected by a second rod with transverse holes to the main pump rod. This main pump rod is made of wood so that when the bore hole is filled with water the buoyancy of the pump rod counterbalances its weight and so reduces the manual effort to operate the pump.
