The spigot (3) and socket (1) joint may be used on large dia. pipes (2, 4) conveying fluid under pressure, being locked by a bolted collar applied to a caulking ring, and incorporating a spacer ring (17) between the spigot barrel and the socket bore. The joint caters for axial mil-alignment of the conjunctive pipe segments, utilising a spacer (17) which is capable of plastic axial deformation under the effects of mis-alignment. The arrangement obtains uniform pressures along the spacer ring which is retained by spigot and socket bearing faces (25, 14) with respectively radial and conical alignments. The spacer may comprise a split deformable ring or have a sidelong S-section (17), may have a comb section with inverted teeth sectors, or may ahve a 'U', an 'L' or a box section etc. In a partic. form the spacer may comprise an envelope filled with spheroids through a radial spigot bore.
