The compound hydrostatic transmission is used on multifunction machines with a motor (7, 25, 43) meeting each function, each motor being fed by a separate force pump (1, 2, 3). A typical application is to a pototo-harvesting machine, the transmission circuitry allowing surplus power from any pump to be diverted to any individual motor as a need arises. The primary feed lines (6) between each pump (1) and its related motor (7) include a distributor (11) together with a conventional overlow valve (8). Secondary feed lines (44, 45), the pressurised fluid output of a pump (2) to be diverted to a motor (7) other than its related motor (25), the diversion being effected through a "balancing" distributor (51) and through a non-return valve (46). A particular pump (2) may serve a motor (25) and a plough elevator ram (26) its output being divertable to the steering ram (7).
