The automatic latch (7) with a hand-lever (12) release is used to secure a load on a fork lift truck during transit. The prongs (1) of the truck slide into the limbs (4) of a pallet, the fork frame including a spring loaded latch bolt (7) which engages a staple (22) incorporated in the pallet frame. A backing plate (31) may locate a vertical 'U' section (8) housing a slidable rod (9), the bolt (7) being fixed to the foot of the rod and projecting below the housing (8). A coil spring (15) may surround a lower length of the rod, interposing the bolt (7) and a fixed diaphragm (16), and acting to maintain the bolt in the basally projecting position. Complementary beveled faces (19, 20) of the bolt and the staple frame (18) may assist engagement. There is a rocking lever (11) with a handle (12) at the head of the housing (8) which is used to effect release.
