The scales have two displays(3, 4) indicating the weight of the letter placed on the weighing plate(1) and the postage cost, in dependence on the postal requirements entered via a series of operating buttons below the two displays. Each operating button is used to actuate a respective switch element(12) of a postage rate selector switch(6), coupled to the display(4) indicating the postage cost via a coding network(10). The control circuit for each of the displays(3, 4) comprises a series of successively operated switch stages(9) cooperating with a sliding contact(11, 18) coupled for movement with the weighing plate(1). Alternatively the switch stages may comprise a series of electro-optical elements, cooperating with a reflective element which moves past them in accordance with the depression of the weighting plate(1).
