Ore is milled to liberate the kerogen particles (I), which are then sepd. by flotation from ore particles (II). Particles (I) are next modified by heating, pref. at 200-1000 degrees, esp. 200-500 degrees C., for 1/2-10, esp. 2-10 hours, and treated esp. by leaching of physical sepn., to recover metals. Flotation pref. uses an organic solvent with b.pt. 60-200 degrees C., esp. straight chain or cyclic hydrocarbons, or their mixts. with b.pt. 70-150 degrees C., then adding water to obtain an upper organic phase contg. particles (I). Used esp. in efficient recovery of U from sedimentary ores, clays etc. contg. 0.5-10% kerogens.
