The beet-topping mechanism has a horizontal rotary shaft with knives at right angles to the travel direction. It is enclosed at the front, top and rear by a curved guard delivering the chopped leaves in a stream to the rear. Deflectors (9) are mounted inside the guard (8), dividing the leaves into separate streams deposited in the ground between the rows of beet which have just been topped. Each deflector can comprise two symmetrical components assembled together in line with a knife.
