The fitting is used in the construction of free standing furniture pieces with shelves, and has a multiple channel (12, 13, 23, 24) section which locates panel ends. The fitting may connect two vertical and two horizontal panels at a node by having a symmetrical H-section with two horizontal flanges (26) cantilevering externally from each leg. The flanges (26) are located at the quarter height points on the respective legs of the H-section. Each channel (12, 13, 23, 24) houses a panel edge and screw holes (38) may be provided. Internal channel faces may be serrated (37). The fitting may locate panel corners and may have a vertical end wall (36) closing all channels.
