Forgeable zinc alloy, contg. titanium, copper and aluminium - used for mfg. coins, coin plates, plaques, medals, ornaments etc., without rolling or blanking defects (BE 8.9.80)
The alloy contains 0.05-1% Ti, 0.02-1% Cu, 0.005-4% Al, 0.02-0.5% Cd, 0.002-0.1% Mg, the remainder being fine zinc with a purity of 9..9-99.995% Zn. The pref. alloy contains 0.05-0.25% Ti, 0.02-0.2% Cu, 0.005-0.05% Al, 0.02-0.2% Cd, 0.01-0.03% Mg, the remainder being Zn with purity 99.9-99.995%. Similar alloys have been used for mfg. coins etc., but the cast ingots exhibit segregation, hot tears, and microporosity; these defects result in a large amt. of scrap when mfg. strip of sheet used for the blanking of coins etc.. The invention minimises such defects, and results in fine-grained material with excellent workability.
