The coupling has a spider driven by a pulley (3) from the engine, which carries friction plates, gripped between discs (9) on a sleeve which is keyed to the shaft (5) of the compressor. Springs (1), spaced circumferentially round the discs, push them and the plates into contact. Studs (11) between the springs project from the discs and press on one side of a bearing (13), on whose other side is a sealing ring (19) in a groove (17), to which compressor discharge pressure is admitted. At a high enough pressure the bearing is moved axially against the springs to disengage the coupling.
