High ortho etherified resole resin coating compositions

A coating composition comprises (A) a high ortho etherified phenol-formaldehyde resole resin, and (B) 1 to 95% wt. of a coreactive resin, said resin (A) being characterized by having (1) partially etherified methylol groups, 90 to 100% of which are ortho oriented; (2) condensed phenol-formaldehyde linkages comprising 25-90% essentially ortho oriented benzyl ether linkages and 10-75% methylene linkages of which 70-90% are ortho oriented and 10-30% are para oriented; and (3) an average degree of polymerization of less than 4, said resin (A) being prepared by reacting phenol and/or a m-substituted phenol with formaldehyde in an aqueous medium under reflux in the presence of a divalent electropositive metal ion while maintaining the pH at 4 to 7 using an organic acid, etherifying the resulting resole with a monohydric alcohol, then dehydrating.
